What drives someone to become a caregiver? For Alicia A., our newest Caregiver of the Month award winner, the answer lies in a deeply personal experience — caring for her father. Helping to care for him at home surrounded by family sparked something in her, and she never looked back. Read on to hear what she’s learned, and why she’s always telling people to “go with JEVS.”
Please briefly say a few words about yourself, to introduce you to our readers.
I am a mom of a college student and an elementary student. I’m very involved in our community and I love being a sports mom. My life consists of being involved with my kids and being the best I can be at my job.
Please tell us a bit about how you became a caregiver.
When my father was diagnosed with cancer, my family and I helped with his day-to-day care to help him remain at home. I loved that we were able to keep him home during this time and to be surrounded by family. I looked into my options on how to be there for other people and their families, so I became an in-home caregiver.
What do you find most rewarding about being a caregiver?
The most rewarding thing about being a caregiver is knowing that I’m giving someone the best quality of life at home and something to look forward to.
What advice do you have for other caregivers? Or what words of encouragement would you offer to a caregiver who is feeling stressed or overwhelmed?
Always treat clients like your own family. Times will be easy and times will be hard; just relax and breathe through it all. Good days will outweigh the bad days.
What would you say about JEVS to someone who was considering becoming a caregiver with us?
I’m always telling everyone about JEVS. I want people to go with JEVS! The Central Pennsylvania staff are always on top of things. They’re responsive and very helpful. The flexibility is very nice too!
