Congratulations to this semester’s JEVS at Home Board of Directors Scholarship winner, Jamal Lee! Jamal is currently attending classes at Orleans Technical College, earning his diploma in Human Services. Jamal started taking Human Services courses in September, but he has been learning how to care for others since he was a child. “My mother has been a lifelong human services worker,” Jamal explained. “She used to work at a school for blind children, and she also worked as a medical technician.”
When Jamal got older, he continued in his mother’s footsteps of helping others by becoming a JEVS at Home Caregiver, which ultimately led him to Orleans Technical College. “This scholarship means a great deal to me,” Jamal said. “Without it, I wouldn’t have had this opportunity.”
Jamal applied for the scholarship because he wanted to grow in a field that would allow him to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. “I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about Human Services, and I have learned a lot more,” Jamal explained. “I’ve learned a lot about case management systems, social welfare systems, and the needs of different populations.”
Jamal wants to continue his education after he graduates but no matter what lies ahead, he knows there’s a world of opportunities waiting for him. “I’d love to continue my education even further,” Jamal said. “Sometimes it’s easy to feel trapped, but between this scholarship and the classes I’ve taken, I’ve realized there are so many opportunities out there.”
